There are so many articles out there on things to avoid when decorating your space. I have read through quite a few of them on my journey to create a welcoming home for my family. You would expect to find everything from clutter and mismatched colors to having too retro or outdated of decor. For my own home I used to worry that my style was too eclectic or random and didn’t fit together like it should.
Well, I have finally discovered for myself what the biggest mistake when decorating a room is - not being true to yourself! A room shouldn’t be purely designed in a way that you feel will impress other people or look how it’s “supposed” to look. While there is nothing wrong with finding a picture in a magazine or online that inspires you, I think that you should also be able to style your space in a way that makes you feel like you are home.
One thing I have found when deciding on adding a piece to my personal home decor is that it should feel like it belongs. If I can imagine my family around it or using it or it inspires feelings of happiness, then it's the one I choose.
This is part of the reason I started creating a lot of my own home decor as well. Creating something unique or recreating something on a budget with recycled materials is a great way to really personalize the rooms my family uses everyday. I also really enjoy fixing up something old into something new rather than throwing it away.
Don’t spend too much time worrying about whether or not you are making a critical design faux pas, just focus on your personal style. Once I let go of stressing out about what others will think of my room decor choices, my style fell into place and I am happy to be creating a beautiful home that my family will grow and make memories in.
I hope you feel inspired to create a space you love, good luck and happy decorating!
