It can be so difficult to choose a paint color for a room, especially if you love all kinds of colors! Luckily, there are a lot of great ideas you can use to help you narrow down your choices and find that perfect paint color. Here are some tips and tricks to help you choose the perfect paint color for any room.

The biggest challenge when deciding what paint color to go with can be figuring out what kind of look you are going for. If you have a theme in mind this can definitely help you decide on your decor color scheme and your paint color (or colors!).

You can find inspiration for your room’s new look on sites like Pinterest & Instagram, in home decor magazines or even from watching design shows. I have also found that sometimes inspiration hits you when you least expect it - you might find a neat item at a thrift store, a yard sale, an antique shop or just browsing the local department store that sparks an idea for a new look for a room.

Once you know what your general theme is, you can choose accents that complement your space. Try to find colors that go well together and then try to base your paint color(s) and accents off of your theme.

Don’t be afraid of color! Colors can be a great way to invoke feelings when you enter a room. What do you want to feel when you or your family and guests are in that room? Consider blues and greens for a more calming effect or brighter reds and oranges for more excitement and warmth. Neutrals are easier to match with other colors and can allow you to have more flexibility with the accents you choose.

Consider the lighting in the room. If there are no windows or low natural light a darker paint color might make the room feel colder/darker whereas a light color may look washed out in a very bright room.

Part of what makes choosing a paint color so hard is the sheer volume of possible shades and hues of every color. One great thing about hardware stores is that they offer paint swatches with several shades of a color so you can take it home and compare it with accents and see it in your space.

Once you have an idea of what shades you are favoring, (it can be hard to narrow it down to just one!) you can purchase a few smaller sample sizes of paint colors to test out on your walls at home. This is great because you don't have to commit to a color right away if you are still unsure! Paint a small section and let it dry to help you get an idea of how it will actually look on the wall.

Another thing to consider when choosing the paint colors for your space is whether or not you want the whole room painted the same color or would it be better to have just an accent wall. If you are loving darker or brighter colors, sometimes having a nice pop of color is a refreshing way to use those colors without making the room seem too dark or too busy.

You should also consider the type of paint that will work best in your space. An example of this would be using a semi-gloss paint in areas where you may need to wipe walls like the kitchen or bathroom. If you prefer a matte look you may need to freshen the paint from time to time if the walls are in a high traffic area. Either type of paint can be made into the color you like so no worries there! Just don’t forget to save the color so you can find it or have it color matched for touch ups.

Picking just one paint color can be a daunting task but thankfully there are ways to help you decide. You can always ask for advice from friends and family too, you never know where inspiration might come from - good luck and happy decorating!
